Chapter 1

"Pneumococcus" (肺炎球菌, Haien kyūkin^?) is the first chapter of Cells at Work!.

Short Summary[]

AE3803, a new red blood cell in a human body, gets attacked by an invading pneumococcus group. She is saved by the neutrophil U-1146, and returns to her duties. However, after getting repeatedly lost, she comes across another pneumococcus. U-1146 arrives to saves her once again, but the bacterium escapes. He then decides to tag along with AE3803 to lungs, which is her and the bacterium's destination. When they arrive and return to their roles, AE3803 realizes that the pneumococcus followed her all along, but U-1146 realizes this and makes it in time to save her and defeat the pneumococcus. They then part ways, but hope to meet each other again.

Long Summary[]

Inside a human's body, roughly 37.2 trillion cells work hard everyday endlessly to keep their host healthy. AE3803, a new, ditzy red blood cell was attacked by a group of pneumococcus bacteria during the midst of her job. U-1146, a neutrophil, appeared in the nick of time and ruthlessly terminated the foreign entities, saving her. However, Pneumonia Coccus, the only surviving bacteria, hid and escaped. Later on, as AE3803 got lost and wandered around the body to search for her destination, the lungs, she bumped into the escaped bacteria. Again, U-1146 managed to saved her, but the pneumococcus escaped. After the two talked and reassured the situation, U-1146 offered to help bring her to the lungs.

As they made their way to the lungs, they came across a group of platelets and helped them unpack some inconveniently stacked cargo that they couldn't reach. U-1146 then noticed that his receptor was acting strange, and Helper T Cell announced the deployment of the Killer T Cells to eliminate the pneumococcus. When AE3803 and the Killer T Cells crossed paths, their squad leader got the chance to intimidate her before she and U-1146 carried on.

After a while they reached to the lungs, AE3803 left and went deeper into the lungs. U-1146 continued to search for the escaped bacteria, but he became curious as to why his receptor suddenly went silent. AE3803 then successfully arrived to her designated aveoli. Unexpectedly, the pneumococcus jumped out of the boxed goods she was delivering. He reveals that he hid inside it when U-1146 appeared previously and received a free ride to the lungs. As the bacteria was about to cause trouble, U-1146 came in through a transmigration route and saved AE3803 once again. After putting up a tough fight with U-1146, the pneumococcus got trapped and sent out the body through a sneeze.

AE3803 thanked U-1146 once again, and although the chances are slim, they hope to see each other again. They then part ways and return to their respective duties.
